All waste generated on our ships is transported ashore to be recycled, reused, incinerated, treated at a landfill, composted or otherwise disposed of at an approved recipient.
Recycling materials helps to save the environment, and it is one important way for us to promote sustainable development. Recycling materials takes much less energy than extracting new resources from nature.
Food waste — The food waste collected by Viking XPRS, Viking Grace and Viking Glory continues its cycle as raw material for biogas. During 2022, we collected 1,307 tons of food waste, which yields approximately 99,000 cubic metres of biogas, which is equivalent to 112,000 litres of petrol.
Carpets — Since 2014, almost 94,000 kg of carpets has been returned from the shipping company's ships to the carpet manufacturer Tarkett, which a few years ago launched a revolutionary project for its business customers to reuse used carpets. The carpets are collected at the end of their life cycle and used as raw material for new carpets.
Textile recycling — At the end of 2022, Viking Line entered into an agreement with the Finnish company Rester Oy for receiving and recycling old textiles. Through various processes, the textiles coming from the ships are broken down into fibres that can be reused for new material. The Rester concept is brand new in Finland, and we at Viking Line are both proud and happy to participate in the important work of recycling textile waste and reducing the environmental impact.
On Viking XPRS, Viking Glory and Viking Grace, equipment has been installed to make efficient sorting and collection of biowastes possible. The biowaste is then transported to a digestion plant for the production of biogas.
