Sustainable development in Cargo

At Viking Line, we are committed to minimising the environmental impact of maritime transport. Our environmental journey began decades ago, rooted in a deep respect for the Baltic Sea and its unique archipelagos – the region we proudly call home.

In 2013, we took a major step forward when Viking Grace began operating between Turku and Stockholm, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Since then, we’ve continued to lead the way in sustainable shipping, now also utilising liquefied biogas (LBG).

Sustainability is a strategic priority in our Cargo operations. We provide shipping logistics solutions that reduce emissions and support our customers in achieving their own climate goals.

1. Green Shipping on Demand – Fossil-free transport

We offer our freight customers on all routes the opportunity to reduce supply chain emissions by choosing sea transport powered by biofuel.
The certified European biofuel supplied by Gasum is used on Viking Glory and Viking Grace on the Turku–Stockholm route.

2. Green freight corridors in action

In collaboration with international road transport partners and companies like Orkla Finland, SSAB, and Valio, we’ve created biofuel-powered freight corridors across the Baltic Sea. These routes have reduced maritime emissions by at least 90% for shipments such as Felix ketchup, steel coils and dairy products.

3. Customer engagement

We actively engage with our customers on green logistics. In meetings and events, we share insights on biofuels and sustainable practices - fostering collaboration for a cleaner future.

4. Innovative technology

In June 2025, we unveiled the Helios concept - a groundbreaking vessel design that could enable fully emission-free service between Helsinki and Tallinn as early as the 2030s. Read more >>
